Ian was elected as the Member of Parliament for Rangitikei in the 2011 election and is standing again in the upcoming election.
Ian’s entry into Parliament follows a nine year career in local politics as Mayor of the Manawatu District, as well as careers in agriculture and business.
His experience includes directorships in FMG, Dunchurch Enterprises (Motor Industry), Pukemarama Farms and as Chair of Farmers Mutual Finance. He has also served as the Chair of Special Olympics New Zealand and a former Chair of the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand.
Ian has three adult children – Diana, Cameron and Angus – and eight grandchildren. He is married to Sue and lives on part of the family property Pukemarama close to the Ohakea Air Force base.
Ian has particular interests in sustainable agriculture, including the protection of our soil and water for future generations and sustainable economic development for rural communities.
As MP for Rangitikei, Ian enjoys representing and serving the people of the Rangitikei’s many small rural communities and taking their issues to Wellington.
He is currently National’s Spokesperson for Forestry, Fisheries and Racing and as such has recently returned to the Primary Production Select Committee, was a member of the Finance and Expenditure Select Committee and is a former Chair of the Primary Production Select Committee.
