It's PAK'NSAVE Petone's 25th Birthday PAKnSAVE Petone is celebrating its 25th birthday this week (November 4 to 10) with amazing price promotions available only at the Petone store. "We will have heaps of not to be missed cheap specials, one of them being Shaved ham which is stil the same price it was 25 years ago" owner Leo 0'Sulivan says Pop Up events will include birthday cake sampling and prizes. PAK'nSAVE Petone is an independently owned and operated store, and has been owned by the 0'Sulivan family since day one. Brothers Leo and Kieran opened the store together on the old Gear Meat works site in 1994. At that time it was just the third PAKTnSAVE in the Wellington region and somewhat of a novelty for the area. They were also the first of the large-scale retailers in the area. As their business has grown, others have come and all are now part of a thriving hub including Briscoes, Rebel Sport and The Warehouse When Kieran opened PAKnSAVE Lower Hut, Leo's sons, Ben and Angus, joined him in operating Petone. Ben and Angus had helped in the store from when they were around 10 years old before completing university degrees, so as a result they know the business, staff and customers and share the same people/community focus as their dad family owned and operated team from left Ben OSulivan Owner Leo 0Sulivan& Angus 0Sullian and as a result the place was packed. People queued to get into the car park in fact the police had to close the carpark there was so much congestion inside the store was chaos with a 60 minute wait to get through the checkout He says it was tough processing so many non-cash transactions with the time consuming old "zip zap machines. The team worked 14-hour days to make sure customers were served as quickly as possible. Leo is hoping that the 25th birthday celebrations will go much more smoothly without any such technical hitch By 2002, because of its popularity, the store they thought was going to last 10 years had grown too small, so they extended it by 30 percent. "Always responding to customer feedback, in 2012 it was clear people wanted protection from the rain in a strong southerly, so we commissioned construction of a canopy over the car park," Leo says. At the same time the storefront was extended to add offices-all while the store stayed open and the office staff kept working. The canopy wasn't just any canopy, but innovative and a finalist for the wooden structure category in a prestigious westem hemisphere award. The beautifuly finished 3,520m glue laminated timber canopy structure was designed to allow for major seismic movement-it was even tested when there was a 6.5 magnitude quake during construction-footage from the security cameras showed cars rocking back and forth but the canopy structure barely moved.
