FRANKLINVets Growing the perfect heifer team Dr llyse Jennens - BVSC (Dist) MANZCVS Need a Imagine for a moment you have the opportunity to set up the perfect team of heifers. What would they look like? What would they achieve when they join the herd? Imagine there were no barriers to grow that majority of calves and heifers I see are not in the perfect team. ANN Pets vet? So, what's the secret? It all begins at the start of each heifer's life (and in fact before) - setting up mum for calving: setting up the calving and calf housing environment to ensure it is warm, comfortable and clean; ensuring the first few hours of each calf's life is well managed with sufficient top-quality colostrum within a few hours of birth. From then on, ensuring enough high-quality feed and taking steps to prevent disease is essential to their growth and their health. Simple right? Commercial farm group from calves to fully grown two-year. Equine Lifestyle farm olds. How would you do it? What would the environment look like that they are raised in? What would you feed them? What would you do to protect them from disease? How would you know that they are succeeding? As a vet I see many different groups of heifers. In my eyes the "perfect heifer teams" I see appear visually the same height as the herd they join, they are in good condition with beautiful shiny coats and compete well with the herd. They have met their target live weight (90% mature live weight at 22 months) and go on to produce well (75% mature cow production) and get back in calf earlier and with a lower empty rate than the rest of the herd. Unfortunately, 79% of New Zealand's heifers calve below their target live weight and the average heifer is 9% below target. So the To help you grow your perfect heifer team we will be running a calf rearing seminar on Tuesday 18th May. Please RSVP to Waitakaruru on 07 868 9030.
