Living off the land by growing food and harvesting natural resources sustainably is not just a passing interest but a way of making ends meet for more and more people, says lecturer and National Programme Co-ordinator Violet Waiker. Te Whare Wänanga o Awanuiarangi offers a range of programs in coastal and marine ecosystems, food sustainability and management, and environmental sustainability and energy. all leading toward the three-year, campus based Te Aho Pútaiao Bachelor of Environmental Studies to be launched in 2021 "At home, in our small communities, on the marae, and even in the cities, people are making lifestyle choices to live more sustainably. These programmes are re-awakening and restoring the knowledge of how our tpuna lived sustainably." Violet says. "People are enjoying the learning and being able to contribute to change. There is a pride in being able to manaaki your manuhiri from your gardens and being less dependent on store-bought resources. "Kaumätua are putting forward their rangatahi for this learning - but it's not always just the young ones. Many rangatahi are learning alongside their parents," Violet says. "It is for us to care for and look after the environment to ensure its wellbeing. In doing so, we ensure our own wellbeing and that of our future generations." Violet says".
