HELPING YOUR MATES Recently an article featured in a national paper about someone is living in an abuse relationship it becomes hard to think clearly a woman who told the Police that her best friend was in a violent relationship and she was concerned for her safety. But you can think clearly and seek help. In the best case, your friend or family member will be safe and their partner can get the help they need It can be difficult to know what to do when you think a loved one, friend or relative is in an abusive relationship. On the one hand, from a place of caring about your friend or family member you want them to be safe, happy and healthy and yet on the other hand, you may fear the consequences of asking them about their relationship with their partner It's what we do when we look out for each other If you suspect someone is being hurt: Give support not advice Listen .Take violence seriously As the story explained, out of layalty and caring for her friend, she got help for her friend by contacting the Police .Don't tell them what to do Let them make their own decisions however long it takes BUT call the Poice on 111 if you think someone is in danger or if you're unsure then check the Danger Signs page at www.areyouok.org.nz Confronting a friend about their partner's behaviour or getting help by notifying the Police isn't easy. Yet sometimes loving someone means showing up and taking risks even if you think they may not like what you're asking or saying. And when PART 2 Hauraki Family Violence Intervention Network (HFVIN) is a collective of around 100 individuals representing over 60 arganisations from across the Thames-Coromandel and Hauraki Regions. We believe in supporting positive connections between people and strengthening healthy relationships and families.
