HUTT REPERTORY THEATRE PRESENTS Central by Dave Armstrong Directed by Doug Buchanan 7-17 April 2021 Venue: 108 Oxford Tce, Lower Hutt This year Hutt Repertory is presenting a year of New Zealand plays to support New Zealand playwrights. We open with Central, a comedy/ drama that is set in one of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand. Aucklander, Michael Caughey, has it all: a successful US screenwriting career, a beautiful actress girlfriend Cherie, and a Central Otago vineyard. Now it's finally time to do what he wants-make an art movie starring Cherie. But can Michael stay true to his dream or give into temptations offered by a cut-throat Hollywood producer? As Michael and Cherie struggle with the issue of money versus art, Brian, a local builder, completes the deck, and Karen, a young Invercargill housekeeper, keeps the household running. Will Michael succumb to temptation? Will Cherie finally get a decent role? What are Brian's mates building in Arrowtown? Surely Karen, a bright Southern girl who can back a trailer and skin a possum, wants to do more in life than make beds? The actors will be familiar to many of you: Erin Howell, Ben Rowan, Abby Foster and a newcomer to our theatre, Alistair Smith. As well as portraying the life and death of an art movie and a relationship, the play also asks just who should decide what is good for the environment and the future of places like Central. Dave Armstrong has written several award-winning plays and writes a weekly column for the Dominion Post. He has won the award for Best New New Zealand play at the Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards three times. As Theatre 108 is supporting New Zealand playwrights for our 2021 season, it would be great if our community gave their support to their local theatre. Show times and dates are April 7-17 2021. 8pm. Matinees Saturday/ Sunday 10/11 April 4pm. No show Monday 12 April. For tickets contact Hutt Repertory Theatre www.huttrep.co.nz, or ring the theatre 04 939 7529 / 021 137 7519.
