www.haurakiplains.school.nz Last week saw the formal opening of the Hayward Farm, an initiative made possible by the vision of the Haurakian Charitable Trust and the generosity of locals, notably Ken Jones and family and Lorraine and Phyllis Hayward, both grand daughters of the original farm owners. The original Hayward Farm belonged to William and Dora Hayward who settled on the Hauraki Plains in 1914. Wila Hayward served on the school committee as did son Hugh Hayward who was on the board of governors for a total of 34 years. The 22 acre block, just a five minute walk from the college, will be used for 'hands on learning experiences for students covering a range of Primary industry and related trades subjects including horticulture, landscaping, building, agribusiness, bee keeping, poultry and agriculture. Already an orchard of over 100 fruit trees, several hundred blueberries Than and manuka trees have been planted by students with bee keeping and A School free range chickens shortly to be introduced.
