Simon O'Connor MP for Tamaki: April Update National proposes Education shake-up; Ongoing Crime in our community; Social Housing Intensification; and Free Speech By now you have hopefully read the latest announcement by the National Party around education. It is really about getting back to basics. At the heart of the announcement is a commitment to teaching children an hour of reading, an hour of writing and an hour of maths, every day. confidence. Linked into all of this is an ability to assess progress so that families can better understand how a student is progressing. There are many good reasons to focus on education, one being centred around crime- or rather, our working to support young people early and preventing their path into truancy, crime, and other anti-social behaviours. I am disappointed to report that crime remains an issue in our community. As part of this, we are also looking at how to further support our teachers, who many themselves have said more development is required - particularly around mathematics to increase their competency and We have of course the more high-profile raids on our local businesses, but I am very aware of the break-ins to homes and cars across every suburb. Parcel and mail theft is also prevalent and increasingly brazen. Paid for by the Parliamentary Service. Authorised by Simon O'Connor, Parliament Holdings, Wellington Locally, housing intensification is also an issue. I have attended a number of community events around this topic, and myself having recently held a public meeting focused on the proposed developments by Kainga Ora, particularly in Orakei, Meadowbank, and Glendowie. There is concern within the community, particularly around the intensity of these developments, the impact on inadequate infrastructure, as well as parking. The community is also keen to ensure there is proper support for both the tenants, and the neighbours of these developments. Free speech is also fully back on the agenda. I have long opposed any attempt at introducing 'hate speech' laws into New Zealand, and continue to do so. Events in recent weeks - which can be best described as angry mobs - have intimidated and sought to violently stop people speaking, and should be a significant warning sign to Simon O'Connor New policy TEACHING THE BASICS BRILLIANTLY An hour each on reading, writing and maths every day mum requirements for what schools munt teach every year in science reading writing maths Regular standardisedamentand clear reporting to parents Better training and more to t pport teachers 00463 New Zealanders. As I have said many times in parliament - the call to limit speech has nothing to do with preventing 'hate', but rather preventing ideas being discussed that some political ideologues disagree with. As I have also noted before - for some it is easier to shut down speech rather than actually find reasonable counter-arguments. Their approach is very clear and has been explicitly demonstrated - reason is replaced with emotion; dialogue with derision; and and democracy with Simon O'Connor important cal news Come along to my public meeting on April 3rd to discussing Orang developments particularly in the of and Meadowbank PUBLIC MEETI with King Ortod Housing in Tam Monday3 Apr 001. comments demands for only one approved set of views.
