Are you happy with the sports facities Mariborough offers or Forestry celebrates 50 years Back in in the late 1960s, some forward thinking people in Mariborough's do you think more can be done? then local government bodies thought it would be a good idea to plant pine trees on large tracts of unproductive land to promote sol stablisation and to generate funding from logging. In 1995 revenue trom logging started to be realised, taking financial pressure oft the region's ratepayers and generating funds for a wide range of community focilities and projects. That original vision has reaped enormous rewards for the Mariborough region, said Councilor Geraid Hope, who chairs the Mariborough Regional Forestry (MRF) Joint Committee "Profits from successful harvests of our publichy-owned forests have benefitted major peojects across the region, including helping meet the cost of the Picton and Renwick sewerage services, the Southen Valleys' irigation project and the Mariborough Convention Centre" Cir Hope said The public has the opportunity to consider all these questions and more now that consultation is open on the Counci's Draft Sports Facisties Strategic Plan The draft plan was adopted by the Council last week following an eight month reviow process. The public have until 5.00 pm on Friday 29 Januory to provide feedback Councilor Michael Fitzpatrick, who holds the region's sports portfolio, seid this was the public's chence to review the plan in the context of the sport they play currently or sports they might like to play in the future. It identifies possible changes, updates or additions which could be made to the Council's sports facilities network over the next ten years, which will also inform the Councils Long Term Plan. "In the nine years since 2012. Marborough has received $24,7M in contributions from Mariborough Regional Forestry. Recent log earnings have helped fund the new Picton Library and Service Centre, the Quays riverside redevelopment in Blenheim, water supply services, the Queen Charlotte Track and the Tula 250 commemorations "We have a current balance of $13.78M from forestry and land development, much of which is already allocated to community projects over the next few years.
