Port Mariborough Pavilion created the inaugural Mariborough Family Challenge with ten famly friendly tracks chosen around the region. Event organiser Regan Russell says families had to take a selfie at any of the ten locations and post the photo on the Port Mariborough Pavilion Facebook page to go into a prize draw. "It was a great success with 554 members and 13,212 page views over the six-week challenge period" Mr Russell said. We also received a lot of positive feedback from participating familes they loved the challenge and were surprised how many tracks they didn't know about "From the coast to the mountains, the Mariborough region is blessed with stunning walking tracks and this challenge was all about encouraging families to get out and experience these amazing places," he said. Council's Harbours team says with daylight saving at an end and the sun setting much carlier 's timely to remind people of the requirements for boating in the Mariborough Sounds at night. The rules set ditterent requirements for navigation ights depending on the length of the vessel concened so it's important boat owners ensure they comply "Unfortunately. a lot of boaties we observe in the Sounds only have port and starboard lights with no stem ight or all-round white light. This means they can't be seen trom behind when taster boats are overtaking them" he said Some of the specific requirements trom Part 22 of the Maritime Rules are as follows: Powerboats over 12m need to display a masthead light, sidelights and stern light · Powerboats under 12m may show an all-round white light instead of a masthead light ond a stem light but must sti show sidelights Saling vessels have specific lighting requirements but a soling vessel using engines must show the lights for a power-driven vessel of its size For esch vessel type the rules also prescribe where the lights must be located on board, and requirements in relation to visibility and brightness.
