SLOW IS QUICKER - at Intersections The safety of all road users at urban intersections is being targeted by the Marlborough Road Safety team, with an aspirational vision for zero deaths on our roads by 2030. This graph shows the number of death or serious injury crashes at intersections versus non-intersections. While the number of intersection crashes reduced in 2020 they had been increasing steadily from 2016. Intersection/Midblock DSI Crashes in Marlborough 100%- 80% IIntersection 60% Midblock Other important factors There were 32 death or serious injury casualties from the 29 crashes: 40% 72.41% Light/overcast conditions Dry conditions A week day Jan, May, June, and Aug were the worst 20% 82.76% 6.9% Pedestrians 0% 68.97% 20.69% Cyclists Motorcyclists or pillions Drivers or passengers 2016 2017 2017 2019 2020 24.14% 2016-2020 Marlborough Death and Serious Injury (DSI) Intersection Crash Data months 48.28% Includes Crossroads, Roundabouts, T-junctions, Y-junctions, and End of Road. 29 death or serious injury crashes (DSI) over the five years. 96.56% of crashes were multi-vehicle (more than one road user involved). 86.68% of drivers at fault or part fault were on a full driving licence across all ages. Alcohol was a factor in 31.03% of crashes. Poor observation was a factor in 72.41% of crashes. Failed to give way or stop were factors in 62.07% of crashes. Our vulnerable road users make up too many of our fatal or serious injury casualties. Please slow down and check carefully at intersections to make trips safer for everyone and help us to achieve 'Vision Zero' - no more deaths on New Zealand's roads.
