The "Switch to Water Challenge is running from 1 November and you can register now. There are great prizes to be won for various categories of entrants. the signals of thirst for hunger so we eat more than we should and obesity is becoming a bigger and bigger problem in New Zealand. Hand in hand with that is an increasing incidence of Diabetes especially in the younger age groups. Sugar is not our friend. Why would you take up this challenge? Drinking water as opposed to sugary drinks is beneficial in so many ways not least of which it is free and doesn't cost you a bean! Of course we dentists have an absolute horror of the decay that sugary drinks cause and all the consequences of that for people. I feel especially strongly about this when I see a child with rampant dental caries Take a look at how much sugar is in the drinks that you usually consume. You may well be shocked. Given that 1 teaspoon is about 4 grams of sugar many of the recreational beverages we consume have 20 or more grams of sugar per 100ml. That's 5 teaspoons of sugar in 100ml! Imagine taking 100ml of warm water and then dissolving 5 teaspoons of sugar into it and drinking that. Most of you would agree I think that doesn't sound like a good idea. Often drinks that we think are healthy have a lot of sugar added to them, such as milk or fruit juice. Sugars have many diferent names so we need to be very aware of due to a high consumption of sugar in their diet. We are supposed to take care of our children, not do them serious harm by being careless about what we feed them. Beyond the dental impact our brains need water to function properly, We just don't think what is actually in our drinks of choice by being familiar with those terms. very well when we are dehydrated. And most people are not well hydrated.
