What's happening in your community. Temporary Chlorine Added to the South Kalapol Water Supply As a precautionary measure, Council has begun supplying chlorinated water to South Kalapol. Chlorine has been introduced as a result of low levels of organic material having been detected. This is a very precautionary approach, taking into account recent feedback from Taumata Arowai, the water regulator for New Zealand, on the chlorine exemption process, and the need to respond even to low level events. It should be expected that at times chlorine will need to be used as an emergency or temporary measure on some of our schemes. It is an important tool in allowing us to operate non-chlorinated schemes over the long term. A more complete update will be provided in the coming weeks outlining the steps Council is going through with its exemption applications overall, including for Woodend and North Kalapol Request for Residents to Report Drainage Issues after Heavy Rainfall The District, like much of Aotearoa, was left soggy this week as Cyclone Gabrielle passed over the motu. Waimakariri was fortunate to be spared the worst of the weather and we continue to assist our northern neighbours with several staff assisting in Auckland's Emergency Operations Centre over the past few weeks. We're continually assessing flood-prone areas to mitigate the risk to people and property during adverse weather events, and we're asking residents for their help identifying problem areas You can report drainage issues to us quickly and easily via our website. The increase in large rainfall events in the past twelve months further highlights the necessary flooding mitigation work council is currently undertaking Oxford Pedestrian Crossing Upgrades Pedestrian crossing upgrades began this week on Main Street in Oxford. Due to concerns around the safety for pedestrians at the three pedestrian crossing along Main Street Oxford, the following upgrades will be completed at each crossing: Upgraded zebra markings to match the new specifications Installation of larger belisha discs Updating of other line marking associated with the crossings Installation of tactile indicator products where required. The crossing at the Town Hall will be shifted further east (towards the Police Station), which will also include extension of the northern kerb build-out. WAIMAKARIRI DISTRICT COUNCIL construction of mountable kerb build-outs on the souther side and amendments to drainage. The road shoulder will be closed where works are being carried out, and there may also be diversions in place for pedestrians. The main traffic management impacts will be when works are being undertaken on the crossing located outside of the Town Hall. The crossing outside of Fresh Choice and the Oxford Store only require minor line marking and tactile indicator products to be installed, so the disruption in this area will be short. Staff will work closely with the contractor to ensure the impacts of on-street parking loss are minimised for businesses within close proximity Work should be be completed by mid-March These small upgrades are being carried out throughout the district this summer.
