What's happening in your community Free Car Seat Checks Free car seat checks will be available in Rangiora Service Centre Carpark on Saturday 13 May, 2-4pm If you have any doubts about how you have your car seat fitted, this is your chance to get a qualified technician to check that you've got it right. You might even be a grandparent who occasionally uses a car seat, and wonders if it's fitted properly Legally all children under seven must use an approved child restraint appropriate for their age and size. Children aged seven must be secured in a restraint if one is available in the vehicle. And it's just a good idea to keep your children as safe as they can be. There are a limited number of spaces in this first session, please contact Council's Road Safety Coordinator Peter Daly on 027 218 2422 to book an appointment. Appointments take about 20 minutes. and you must book. We will be running more of these sessions in future. Rubbish Bag Collection We're changing how we collect your rubbish bags from this week. Some rubbish bags will be picked up by ute and trailer rather than the usual rubbish truck. If you notice the truck drive past and your bag isn't collected, don't worry and please remember to pop your bag beside your bin and not on top. Traffic Lights Switched on The traffic lights at the intersection of Southbrook with Torlesse/Coronation Streets are now in operation. The lights will provide a safer crossing point for children walking and cycling to school. We will be monitoring the traffic lights over the coming days and making any tweaks to the phasing as required. The old kea school crossing will be removed and the final asphalt surfacing on Southbrook Road will be completed over the next 2-3 weeks Outdoor Burning Environment Canterbury (ECan) are the responsible agency for enforcing air, land and water standards. ECan's Canterbury Air Regional Plan allows some outdoor burning but encourages alternatives such as composting, mulching, using kerb-side collection services or visiting a transfer station. The Air Plan's outdoor burning measures are based on property size, not on whether you're in a rural or urban area. Even if buming is allowed under the rules, be aware that Fire and Emergency New Zealand have their own restrictions and permitting requirements, which can be accessed on their handy website tool To report a burning-related incident, call Environment Canterbury on 0800 765 588 (24 hours) or use the Snap Send Solve app to report an issue from your mobile phone. There are also different rules that apply if your property is either under or over two hectares.
