C4LD Meeting with Local Govt Minister Waimakariri Mayor and Co-Chair of Communities 4 Local Democracy (C4LD) Dan Gordon, along with Co-Chair and Manawatu Mayor Helen Worboys, attended a meeting last week at the Beehive in Wellington with the Minister of Local Government Kieran McAnulty to discuss their concerns with aspects of the Government-led Three Waters Reform. They were joined by Mayors from across New Zealand. "We appreciated the chance to be part of the discussion," said Mayor Gordon "Based on Tuesday's discussions it appears some minor changes are being considered. However, there would need to be much further movement in order to achieve broad consensus and for the reforms be palatable to our member Councils and the wider community "For us it's not simply about the number or size of entities proposed, it has always been about ownership and effective control and influence of our assets. It's an issue of basic property rights. which was a point we made clear to the Minister. "We also made the point that there is no need to rush this reform. We renewed our offer to work together with the Govemment to see if we can find consensus. It would be ideal if support could be achieved that is cross party, as if it is rushed it will simply become a political football and an issue at this year's election "We followed up our offer to work together in a letter to the Minister and Prime Minister. We now await the Goverments response and hope that this reset' is exactly that and not simply a rehash of the current model window dressed with minor tweaks. Let's Talk About Wolffs Road Suspension Bridge The Wolffs Road Suspension Bridge is a historically listed pedestrian bridge in West Eyreton that spans the Eyre River in North Canterbury. The 73m 1 suspension bridge constructed circa 1948, was originally built to enable people and goods to cross the Eyre River when high water levels blocked the adjacent vehicle ford. The bridge has been in a state of disrepair for many years and is no longer usable as a pedestrian bridge. There is currently no walking track or clear access to either end of the bridge due to the overgrown vegetation. The bridge deck is approximately 3m above the river bed level The structure consists of steel rail iron towers, steel wire suspension cables with a timber deck and transoms, and concrete suspension cable anchorages. The structure was listed as a Category 2 Historic Place in February 1994. WAIMAKARIRI DISTRICT COUNCIL During the Long Term Plan process, a submission was received from the Cust and Districts Historical Records Society about the bridge Concerns were raised about the suspension bridge falling further into disrepair, with the risk of losing this heritage item. The Society would like to see some of the heritage values be retained along with information panels on the history of the bridge. A site inspection and bridge refurbishment options report completed in 2021 recommended disestablishing the structure. This would leave behind the substructure and cable anchors to be refurbished, retaining some of the heritage fabric of the structure. Information boards would be included so that visitors can learn more about the history of the bridge. The second option considered in the report, but not supported due to cost, is to refurbish the existing structure. We're asking for the community's feedback on the preferred option. It should be noted that there is currently no funding available for the preferred option at present, funding would need to be sought through the Annual Plan or Council Long Term Plan process or via external funders Have your say at waimakariri.govt.nz/letstalk Waimakariri Stash Swap Browse for new treasures and find a home for your unwanted craft supplies with no cash involved!
