Milestone for Kalapol Stormwater and Flooding Improvements A milestone for the Kalapol Stormwater and Flooding Improvements project was achieved last week with the installation of the first of two big surface mounted stormwater pumps. This install is part of the stormwater upgrades project as part of the Shovel Ready Funding These pumps will help to alleviate flooding and Increase resilience in Kalapol by helping to pump and discharge stormwater out and over the stop bank into Kalapoi River. To date the new pump station yard has been constructed, including the concrete pad for the pumps, and large grated inlet structure where the water will enter, and the pipework will suck the water from Even more work has been going on underground with installation of the large diameter stormwater pipes that run over the stop bank and will discharge into the outflow channel at Kaiapol River. Once the second pump has been delivered in the coming week, this pipework will be connected and the pump station almost ready to go. This project is being jointly funded by Council and the Government through its Shovel Ready Project fund Oxford No. 1 Water Supply - Boil Water Notice A boil water notice has been issued for the Oxford No. 1 Water Supply due to high turbidity (cloudiness) As a precautionary measure, a boil water notice is in place on this scheme from today to ensure that this water supply is safe for consumption. Please inform any neighbours or friends on the scheme who may not be aware of this notice. The boil water notice is expected to be in place for approximately three weeks to allow Council's water team to take the main well offline to undertake remedial works. Over this period, please minimise the use of water (if possible) as this will help us manage the situation Residents on this supply need to use boiled tap water or store-bought bottled water for drinking. cleaning teeth, making ice, washing dishes and preparing food until further notice. Tap water should be boiled on a rolling boil for one minute. Helping Young People into the Workforce The Mayors Taskforce for Jobs (MTF)) project is off to a flying start in the Waimakariri District The project which aims to support young people currently not in education, employment or training into the local workforce was launched earlier this year. Mayor Dan Gordon says, "In two short months our MTF) programme is already starting to prove its WAIMAKARIRI DISTRICT COUNCIL worth as a means to support and empower local young people toward a positive future." "Recently the team have been involved in a programme with local high schools and are making further connections in the community each week. I'm excited to see the positive impact this will have on young people in the District." Elizabeth Trevathan, MTFJ Facilitator says, "I'm really pleased with the interest we've had so far with over 25 young people reaching out for support and we've placed three young people in employment already "We're making good connections with local businesses who are keen to get involved and provide opportunities for young people in our District too." Elizabeth and Mayor Dan Gordon had a working lunch earlier this month with Principals and careers advisors from the four high schools across the District to talk about how they could work together. The team were also present at the North Canterbury Youth Futures Expo Bruce Keamey, Rangiora High School Principal says, "This is a great initiative that a number of our students could definitely benefit from One of the biggest barriers to employment for some of our young people is driver licences so it's great to know that there is funding to support lessons, licencing fees and defensive driving courses to help to overcome this."
